The University of Maribor Participates in the i-DREAMS Project to Develop a Safety System for Vehicle Management

The i-DREAMS project is in progress. It was launched in May 2019 as part of the Horizon 2020 programme, which includes employees of the Chair of Motor Vehicles and Road Safety and the Chair of Road Construction at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation and Architecture of the University of Maribor. The aim of the project is to develop a system for monitoring driving conditions, driver status and his behaviour (when driving along highways).

The system will send alerts in real time when the safety level is below the critical threshold. These warnings will help drivers drive in the so-called SAFETY TOLERANCE ZONE – STZ (CONA VARNOSTNE TOLERANCE). The STZ concept consists of three phases: normal driving, danger phase and avoidable accident phase. When the driver enters the danger phase, the system sends a warning. When the driver moves from the danger phase to the avoidable accident phase, the system gives instructions (in-vehicle intervention). At the end of driving (post-trip intervention), the driver will be informed whether he drove safely. This system will be tested by means of simulation, as well as in real conditions in five countries participating in the project.
