The Order for Exceptional Merit: The University of Ljubljana Receives the Highest State Award for Its 100th Anniversary

On Tuesday, 3 December 2019, a solemn academy on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the University of Ljubljana was held in the Gallusova Dvorana Hall of the Cankar House in Ljubljana. During the event, the university received the highest state award – the Order for Exceptional Merit – for its contribution to the spiritual and cultural development of the Slovenian people, the establishment of the Slovenian language as well as the outstanding achievements in science and education. Slovenian President Borut Pahor, the honorary patron of the event, handed the award to the Rector of the University of Ljubljana Prof. Dr Igor Papič.

In turn, Prof. Dr Frederick Duncan Michael Haldane, Nobel Laureate in Physics and Honorary Doctor of the University of Ljubljana, noted that small nations (in particular, Slovenes) are also able to contribute to science and technology, while the importance of educating a highly intelligent and technologically advanced population keeps growing because this is a condition for the development of an economy that is based on modern technologies.
