The European Union Distinguishes a Slovenian Development in Fibre Optic Internet
The RUNE project, which is currently the first and only international project at the EU level to create ultra-fast broadband optical infrastructure in rural Slovenia and some parts of Croatia, received the European Broadband Award 2019 in the most prestigious category – Innovative Models of Financing, Business and Investment. This is an annual event where the European Commission evaluates and awards outstanding broadband infrastructure projects in Europe. With these awards, the Commission focuses on the successful implementation of broadband infrastructure.
The awarding ceremony took place at the Bouche à l’Oreille Restaurant, Brussels on 2 December 2019. The ceremony was held by Nancy Pascal, European Commission Chief Political Coordinator, and Guido Acchioni, Representative of the European Commission. The awards were presented by members of the international jury who previously evaluated the announced projects and selected 5 winners from among 15 finalists in five categories.
RUNE is the first European project funded by the Connecting Europe Broadband Fund (CEBF) to address the lack of rural broadband infrastructure through the use of private investment instruments without government subsidies.
