Studienkolleg in Germany

Studienkolleg in Germany

What is this?

Studienkolleg or Foundation Year is a compulsory programme that prepares foreign applicants for admission to state universities in Germany. Studienkolleg compensates for the difference in the number of school years in Germany and the foreign student’s country of residence. Prospective students can check if their secondary school-leaving certificate is equivalent to a German secondary school certificate here.

You do not need to pass the Studeinkolleg programme to enter private universities in Germany. It is only needed to equalise the chances and statuses of applicants and provide them with equal rights to receive free education.

Why is it important?

Many foreign applicants want to study in Germany for free. In just one year, Studienkolleg gives you the opportunity to participate in the general competition for admission in the chosen direction and get your right to study at a state university in Germany for free.

Benefits of studying under a private
Studienkolleg programme

Private Studienkolleg programmes provide applicants with the same chances of admission to public universities. At the same time, private programmes can be attended under simplified conditions. In this case, you can almost always avoid competition for admission. Some private Studienkolleg programmes have the necessary accreditation to host the state exams (Feststellungsprüfung) in the premises of an educational institution.

The Studienkolleg programme offered by the 2M’s partner university has the necessary accreditation and entitles its students to take the state exam (Feststellungsprüfung) at their own university. It’s always easier and not so emotional because students already know all the teachers. This is an additional bonus for those who want a guaranteed result.

Another advantage of private Studienkolleg programmes is the partnership with German universities. Some private Studienkolleg institutions have agreements with such universities and guarantee admission to the state free programmes for an applicant who has successfully completed the Foundation Year.

Requirements for admission

To enter a private Studienkolleg programme, it is enough to know German or English at the B1 level, while the state Studienkolleg programme requires at least B2 level.

In the absence of sufficient knowledge of the language, with Studienkolleg, you can supplement the programme with 3 months of language training, which will help you achieve the required level. Of course, an applicant with zero knowledge of the language will not be accepted for such training. The minimum language level requirement is A2.

When entering a private Studienkolleg programme, the school records do not play a dominant role. Applicants are interviewed by a professor and pass an entrance test.
