Statistics Service: Over Five Million Tourists Visit Slovenia in Nine Months of 2019

According to the country’s Statistics Service, 5.2 million tourists visited Slovenia in January–September 2019. They made 13.2 million overnights. As compared to the same period last year, the number of tourists increased by 5.7%, and the number of overnights grew by 1.9%. The number of arrivals of both local and foreign tourists has also increased by 1.5% and 4.3%, respectively.

In September 2019, about 630 thousand tourists visited Slovenia, which is 3.7% more than in September 2018. In September 2019, the majority of overnights among foreign tourists were made by Germans (20%), Austrians (9%) and Italians (7%). As compared to September 2018, the rate of overnight stays among German tourists increased most significantly – by 15%.

The total number of overnights in September 2019 amounted to almost 1.5 million, which is 2.6% less than in September 2018. Most often tourists used hotels, in which over 680 thousand overnights were recorded. The hotels are followed by private rooms, apartments, guest houses, and campsites.

The most popular destinations for overnight stays among foreign tourists were the municipalities of Ljubljana, Piran, Bled, Bohinj, and Kranjska Gora. In September 2019, local tourists mainly preferred staying in the municipalities of Piran, Isola and Ankaran. The majority of overnight stays were made in mountain municipalities – 30%. Municipalities of Primorska Region accounted for 22% of overnight stays, while resort municipalities recorded 17%.
