Slovenian Team Wins the European Handball Championships

The youth national team of Slovenia becomes the European champion in handball in the category under 20 years. In the decisive match at the home arena Zlatorog in Celje, in the presence of 5,400 fans, the Slovenes took the lead over the championship’s favourite – the French team – with a score of 31:30.

In the dramatic final match of the European Youth Championships, the Slovenes seized the initiative in the second half and managed to keep the victorious score in a tense struggle. The main hero of the fight and the entire championships was Grega Ocvirk, who has 11 goals under his belt. He scored the fateful 31st goal for the Slovenian national team in the final match with France. In the decisive last minutes of the fight, spare goalkeeper Gašper Dobaj, who parried 6 dangerous shots, and striker Kristjan Horžan, who scored 5 of 6 goals, showed themselves from the best side.

Leaders of the Slovenian national team, Grega Ocvirk and Domen Novak, entered the symbolic national team of the championships. Grega Ocvirk also became the top scorer of the championships.

The national team of Germany, beating the Portugal team with a score of 29:26, won bronze medals.
