The Results of Slovenian Winemakers in 2015 and Forecasts for 2016
“No winemaker can complain about the wine quality.”
According to the preliminary estimates of the Ministry of Agriculture, in 2016, Slovenia will produce 63 million litres of wine, which is 2 million more than the previous year. These figures are based on the official statistics and do not take into account the statistics of all winemakers. According to the State Statistics Service data, which will be published in late November, the overall figures for 2016 exceed the planned ones by 20 million litres.
Generally, the grape harvest in Slovenia is already completed, and the campaign for organising a traditional seasonal celebration of the wine lovers — “martinovanje” (in Slovenian) has already started. As the director of a large winemakers association “Vinska Družba Slovenije” Dušan Brejc explained, this year no winemaker can complain about the wine quality.
Grape Harvest in Slovenia: an Overview of the Major Manufacturers
According to Silvan Peršolje, the Director of the “Vinska klet Goriška brda” cellar, which unites 400 wine-growing families, the harvest has decreased by 1/4 amounting to 5,600 tonnes of grapes or about 3.8 million litres of wine. The Vinakoper Company grew 4,500 tons of grapes, from which it will produce 3.4 million litres of wine. This is about 8% higher than in 2015 and 5% less than the planned figure, as the Chairman of the Vinakoper Board Nevijo Pucer explained. The Radgonske Gorice Company’s harvest has reduced by ¼. This company is famous for its sparkling wines. According to the Chairman of the Borut Cvetkovič’s company board, there are in total 4,000 tons of grapes at their disposal, which is enough for the production of 3 million litres of wine. The adverse weather conditions in Podravje have not prevented the Ptujsko klet wine cellar from finishing successfully the season of 2016. “The summer was quite warm. The frost, which engulfed the Upper Styria and Austria, did not affected Haloz too much,” the director of the Vinko Mandl’s cellar said. In 2016, the Ptujska klet cellar has cultivated 52 hectares of vineyards, which earlier belonged to the bankrupt Vinag Company, where 100 tons of grapes were grown. The total grape harvest reached up to 1.5 million kg, from which about 1 million litres of wine will be produced. According to Mandl, in October 2016, the Ptujska klet wine cellar for the fifth time in a row received the individual award as the best Slovenian winemaker at the world’s largest wine tasting AWC in Vienna.
In 2015, the KZ Krško wine cellar bought out 1,750 tons of grapes, from which it will produce 1.3 million litres of the “Cviček” brand wine. According to the director of the KZ Krško cellar Janez Živič, the “Cviček” wine cost has recently decreased significantly due to a large amount of stored goods. The Director of the KZ Metlika cellar Andrej Škof explained that, in spite of the slight frost and hail, in 2016 his company managed to buy about 1/4 more grapes than in 2015, which is about 550,000 kilograms, of which it would produce about 440,000 litres of wine.
The USA Is the Most Important Wine Export Market
The exports of wine in Slovenia is increasing in recent years. However, its overall share largely depends on the cask wine exports. “When there is a big amount of cask wine, its exports reaches 8 million litres, whereas the traditional exports of bottled wines makes around 5 million litres,” Dušan Brejc highlighted. The United States are the main market for Slovenian wines. The exports to China has also increased in recent years. In the last decade, the wine imports has exceeded the exports. For the last 10 years (2006–2016), it has grown from 6 to 13 million litres. The major share of foreign wine is imported from Italy, Macedonia, Austria, Hungary and Germany.
