Ptuj Holds the Fourth Salon Sauvignon Wine Festival

On Saturday, 21 April 2018, the Fourth Salon Sauvignon Wine Festival was held in Ptuj. The event took place on the territory of the local Dominican Order Monastery. In total, 46 winemakers from Slovenia (Podravje, Posavje and Primorska regions), Croatia and Serbia presented their products. Guests of the festival were able to taste over 100 brands of Sauvignon wine and try dishes of local cuisine.

The festival welcomed not only tasters and experts, but also ordinary lovers of this noble drink. The dry wines of the 2016 and 2017 vintages were mainly presented. In the first place, the wines of 1971 vintage from the Ptuj wine cellar were distinguished in the category of old wines.

The best restaurants in the city provided a rich culinary offer including Gostilna Ribič, Grand Hotel Primus Restaurant, Gostilna Amadeus, Gostilna Grabar, as well as the local Biotechnology School, the pupils of which helped to serve the guests of the festival. The menu, among other things, included traditional homemade cottage cheese strudel (Slovene: štruklji). Low-calorie dishes were also presented for the supporters of a healthy lifestyle, for example, a vegetarian version of lard.

It should be noted that professional winemakers in Slovenia study at the University of Nova Gorica. Here they not only learn the technology for wine production, but also study the industry related disciplines taking into account modern requirements. Therefore, starting from 2016/2017 academic year, students are offered elective courses, such as “Wine Tourism and Direct Sales in Wine Cellars”, “Marketing of Wine: Communication, PR, Organization of Events and Consumer Behaviour” and “Modern Approaches to Wine Sales”. Besides, the elective course “International Wine Market” was updated. The content devoted to the wine export was expanded and improved.

My study programme is very unusual. With the development of this profession, new opportunities are opening up, especially in Europe. Wine is very popular here. There are many manufacturers and fans of this drink in Slovenia,” recounts a student from the University of Nova Gorica, Elizaveta Popova.
