Potato Dumplings with Fruit

Potato dumplings with fruit are also amongst most popular Slovak dishes. Cherries, strawberries, apricots, plums, blueberries can be used. They are served sweet and as a topping/streusel curd, nuts, poppy seed or bread crumbs are used.

For the dough:

  1. 400 g flour, semi-coarse,
  2. 4-5 pcs potatoes, boiled in their skins,
  3. ½ teaspoon of salt,
  4. 1 pc of egg,
  5. 80 g of breadcrumbs,
  6. 80 g of powdered sugar,
  7. 50 g of walnuts, ground,
  8. 120 g of butter, warmed up.


  1. strawberries, cherries, apricots, plums (depending on the season).


Cook the potatoes in their skins, after cooling peel and grate them on a fine grater. On a board, knead a stiffer dough from all the ingredients: flour, eggs, potatoes and salt. Roll out the dough soon so as it won´t become runny. Cut it into squares, place washed and drained fruit into every piece and form it into the shape of a ball. Cook in slightly salted boiling water for about 7 minutes until they float to the surface. Take them out but do not rinse. Anoint the finished dumplings with melted butter, sprinkle with topping – cream cheese with sugar, ground poppy seeds with sugar, ground nuts with sugar or fried breadcrumbs.

Procedure for the crumbly topping – streusel:

  1. Fry the breadcrumbs on a dry pan until pink. Sweeten the fried breadcrumbs with powdered sugar, you can add minced or chopped walnuts.
