Poroshenko’s Visit to Slovenia

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko paid an official visit to Slovenia and met with the country’s leader Borut Pahor. Poroshenko has become the first Ukrainian president, who has arrived to Slovenia for the past 17 years. After the meeting, Poroshenko thanked Slovenia for supporting the European aspirations of the Ukrainians.

The bilateral negotiations culminated in a press conference, where Borut Pahor expressed his solidarity with his Ukrainian counterpart on a number of issues concerning the state-to-state relations and the international politics.

The President of Slovenia has said that he took part in the inauguration of Petro Poroshenko two years ago, and it was, according to Pahor, “a signal that Slovenia wanted to give Ukraine that was experiencing a difficult transition period.” Pahor has said that both he and his Ukrainian counterpart stand for the peaceful resolution of conflicts. Borut Pahor underlined that Slovenia condemned the annexation of the Crimea by Russia, which, in his opinion, was a flagrant violation of the international law.

The presidents discussed bilateral cooperation and expressed satisfaction with the strengthening of economic cooperation between Slovenia and Ukraine. As Borut Pahor has noted, in the first half of 2016, the trade between the two countries has increased, which is a good sign.

Slovenian Exports to Ukraine Decreases

After the start of the crisis in Ukraine in 2014, the economic relations between Slovenia and Ukraine have deteriorated: the exchange of goods between the two countries in 2014–2015 decreased by 31% and one of the main reasons for this was a decrease in the export of Slovenian products. In 2015, the trade between the countries reached 142.1 million euros: the exports — 121 million euros, while the imports — 20 million euros.

Poroshenko will also meet with the Prime Minister Miro Cerar and the Speaker of the Parliament Milan Brglez at an official dinner, and in the afternoon, after the ceremony of opening the monument to Grigory Skovoroda in the Navje North Park, he will visit the Chamber of Commerce of Slovenia, where he will meet with Slovenian business executives. Poroshenko also plans to have a meeting with the mayor of Ljubljana Zoran Janković.
