Moving Procedures for Obtaining Education in Hungary

According to the legislation of the Hungary, foreigners studying at Hungary educational institutions must obtain a long-term student visa.

A Holder of the Student Residence permit has the Following Rights:

  • The right to reside in Hungary during the period for which the residence permit is issued
  • Free movement within the Schengen Area
  • Students can work part-time
  • Discounts on travel tickets, reduced-price meals, student discounts for museums, cinemas etc.
  • The right to participate in international exchange programs

Where to Submit Documents and Receive a ‘Student’ Residence Permit?

The application must be submitted at the nearest Hungarian embassy or consulate, in the student’s country of residence, or in a selected neighboring country, if there is no consulate in the student’s country.
If you are a citizen of a non-EU country and you are allowed to enter Hungary without special prior permission (e.g. from Canada, the USA) you can apply for your residence permit in Hungary.

Can I work during my studies?

Yes, you can work during your studies. There are different rights and obligations, depending on your ctizenship:

  • EEA students – no limitation regarding the working hours, you need to hold a registration card;
  • studnets from third countries – can be employed during your studies with a residence permit for study purposes and work up to 24 hours a week during your study period, or 90 days or 66 working days outside your study period.

Can I work after finishing my studies?

Following the successful conclusion of your studies, you can apply for a working permit:
1. You can apply for the Employee card anytime, even during your studies,
2. If you conclude your studies and you still have a valid visa/residence permit, you can apply for a “job seeker visa,” which will give you additional nine months after finishing studies to find a job or start your own business. The applicants have to be included in an accredited program, not a language course.
