The Maribor Institute of Sports Medicine Has Received the FIFA Certificate

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Maribor officially presented the FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence Certificate to the project led by Professor Matjaž Vogrin. In Slovenia, Michel D’Hooghe, the Chairman of the Medical Commission of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), opened this project.

The FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the General Secretary of FIFA Fatma Samoura, D’Hooghe and the Chief Physician of FIFA Jiri Dvorak signed the certificate. The Slovenian Centre for FIFA Sports Medicine became only the 35th such centre in the world. The project involves the Institute of Sports Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Maribor, the Maribor Clinical Centre, the Federation of Slovenian Football (NZS) and the Research Centre of the University of Primorska managed by Matjaž Vogrin, a highly experienced doctor of the “Maribor” football club and the national team of Slovenia.

The UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin noted that the high qualification of Matjaž Vogrin and his colleagues was appreciated by a great number of the world experts in the field of sports medicine. The Slovenian Centre is already working with the legendary Spanish “Barcelona”. Due to the high accuracy of research, especially in the field of muscle injuries, the Slovenian specialists regularly receive invitations from all over the world. Matjaž Vogrin himself, for example, gave a lecture at the traditional annual Muscletech Medical Symposium.

The best argument for the importance of modern sports medicine is a huge interest in it on the part of the strongest and richest teams of the world. For example, the “Barcelona” club annually allocates 7.5 million euros to medical research. Other clubs involving the players of such level as Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar also provide similar amounts. Experts have estimated that each player’s injury in the Champions League, which leads to his absence on the field within a month, costs approximately 510 thousand euros for his club.
