Dr Verica Trstenjak Receives the Austria’s Highest State Award
Dr Verica Trstenjak, professor of European law, former general lawyer of the Court of Justice of the European Union, received the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art, First Class. The President of the Republic of Austria Alexander Van der Bellen awarded Verica Trstenjak for outstanding scientific achievements in European law and her contribution to strengthening relations between Austria and Slovenia.

Professor Dr Verica Trstenjak lectured at many universities in Europe and around the world. She is a teacher of the Master’s degree programme at the University of Vienna and at the Faculty of Law at the Sigmund Freud University of Vienna. She also gives lectures at the Maribor and Ljubljana universities in Slovenia. Trstenjak is a member of numerous scientific groups, the Board of the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe and (since 2017) the Board and the Executive Council of the EU Fundamental Rights Agency.
The scientific career of Verica Trstenjak has been closely connected with Austria since her professional formation. At the University of Vienna, Trstenjak prepared her PhD thesis, then, as the Secretary of State for Science, participated in the preparation of a new bilateral agreement on scientific cooperation between Austria and Slovenia. Verica Trstenjak has made a significant contribution to strengthening cooperation between countries and the development of their legal systems as well as their recognition in the EU.
