Cuisine of Slovenia’s Regions: Walnut Nests – Cookies with Nuts and Chocolate

Cooking time – 45 minutes.


  1. 1 egg,
  2. 200 g margarine,
  3. 50 g butter,
  4. 100 g sugar,
  5. 50 g cocoa powder,
  6. 1 sachet of vanilla sugar (18–20 g),
  7. 400 g fine flour,
  8. 100 g chopped walnuts.


  1. 100 g milk chocolate,
  2. 2 tbsp milk or cream,
  3. 2 drops of rum.


Beat the eggs. Separately, beat the margarine and butter (at room temperature) with sugar and vanilla to form a foamy mass, then add the beaten eggs. Add cocoa powder and mix. Add flour gradually, stirring with dough nozzles.

After the formation of an even compact mass, manually knead the dough. Shape smooth balls (weighing 20 g) out of the dough with wet hands. In the middle of each ball, make a hole (cavity) with the tip of the handle of a big wooden kitchen spoon and fill the cavity with chopped nuts. Put the cookies on a baking sheet covered with baking paper.

Bake in a preheated oven for 20–25 minutes at a temperature of 160 ºС. Then remove from the oven, let cool, and fill with the melted milk chocolate.
