Cuisine of Slovenia’s Regions: Potato Moussaka with Wild Garlic

Cooking time – 45 minutes.

Ingredients (for 3–4 persons)

  1. 750 g potatoes,
  2. 3–4 boiled eggs,
  3. small bunch of wild garlic,
  4. 150 mL cream,
  5. 150 g lard,
  6. 1 onion,
  7. 150 g cheese,
  8. salt, pepper,
  9. nutmeg,
  10. vegetable oil,
  11. butter.


Cook potatoes and eggs and cut into slices.

Add a small amount of vegetable oil or butter onto a baking sheet, put the sliced potatoes, wild garlic, eggs, cheese, finely chopped onions and lard, sliced or diced, in layers. Add salt and pepper to taste. Repeat layers depending on the amount of ingredients or the size of the baking sheet.

Add crushed nutmeg to the cream, add a little salt, and pour the resulting mass on the ingredients. Top with the sliced cheese and pour with vegetable oil.

Bake for 30-45 minutes in the oven at 180°С. The duration of cooking depends on the amount of ingredients and the desired degree of baking.
