Cuisine of Slovenia’s Regions: Chicken with Rice and Seasonings Baked in Oven

A simple, bright and very tasty dish for the whole family. Cooking time – 60 minutes.

Ingredients (for 4 portions)

  1. 4 chicken legs or wings,
  2. 200 g rice,
  3. 1 big onion,
  4. 2 small peppers: 1 green, 1 red,
  5. 1 carrot,
  6. seasonings (salt, pepper, Vegeta),
  7. vegetable oil for frying.


Put the pre-seasoned chicken meat for 15 minutes in a preheated oven and bake it until golden colour.

Meanwhile, fry the onion with vegetable oil in a skillet, add carrots and two peppers cut into small cubes. Fry all together for about 5 minutes, then add the rice and stir until the rice becomes transparent. Then remove the chicken from the oven and put rice with vegetables on it.

In a small saucepan, bring 600 mL of water to a boil. Use three times more water than the rice used. Dissolve one bouillon cube in the water. Add the chicken and rice to the broth.

Put everything back into the oven for about 30 minutes until all the liquid evaporates and the rice dries.

You can add bacon or smoked lard to the chicken.
