It is quite simple to plan the life and career of an engineer in the European Union. There are all conditions for sustainable professional development of young engineers and turning them into highly qualified specialists of international level. To start building a career, it is enough to have the European engineering education obtained in one of the EU countries, for example, in Slovenia.

In Slovenia, the recognition of engineer qualification and issuance of Professional Engineer certificates are the responsibilities of the (Inženirska zbornica Slovenije). The status of a Professional Engineer means that its holder is able to pursue an independent professional activity and is licensed by one or more government agencies for the provision of professional engineering services as an independent practitioner. The next stage of engineer professionalism growth is to obtain the status of a European Engineer (EUR ENG). To obtain the status of a European Engineer, it is necessary not only to successfully graduate from a EU recognized and accredited university, to have practical experience and complete a career enhancement training, but also to be recognized by an independent organization representing the entire engineering community of the European Union.
The European Federation of National Engineering Associations () deals with the recognition of the European Engineer qualification.
Staring from 2017, the European Engineer Card becomes an official document that unifies the requirements for engineers working within the EU (similar to common requirements of the Bologna system for higher education). The data of the document holder shall be recorded into the FEANI Register, which is located in Brussels, forming the pan-European database. The Engineering Card guarantees an increase in the competitiveness of its owner within the European labour market.
To obtain the status of an International Professional Engineer (IntPE) and be registered in the (EMF), a candidate must have the status of a Professional Engineer in his/her country of origin and have practical experience of at least 7 years, including 2 years of work in a responsible management position related to the performance of an engineering project.
The Forum has established the International Register of Professional EMF Engineers, which includes the EMF Registered International Professional Engineers that are evaluated by the EMF Monitoring Committee and correspond to the EMF Agreement and Memorandum of Understanding criteria signed by the member countries of the Forum.
