The Snow Sculpture Festival “The Castles of King Matjaž” To Be Held in Črna na Koroškem

On 25-27 January 2019, the traditional 27th Snow Sculpture Festival “The Castles of King Matjaž”, the main winter tourist event in the Carinthia region, will take place in the town of Črna na Koroškem.

The opening of the event will take place on Friday, 25 January 2019, at 4:00 p.m., when the King Matjaž’s outing to the Bistra landscape park will be held. At 6:00 p.m., the evening slalom for the King Matjaž Cup will take place on the local skiing run under the light of torches.

The construction of snow figures will begin on Saturday, 26 January 2019, at 10:00 a.m. and will last until 4:00 p.m. At 6:00 p.m., the results will be announced and the awarding ceremony will be held.

The Sunday part of the Festival programme will be entirely devoted to children. The results of the contest of stories and drawings dedicated to King Matjaž will be announced.

The rules of the Snow Sculpture Festival are simple. A team of 5–8 people of any age has the right to use only natural materials (water, snow, brushwood). Each team must provide a sketch of its snow castle and bring the necessary tools (buckets, saws, shovels, sledges). Teams can use a land plot with an area of 5×5 metres.

Over two dozen teams have already filed their applications for participation in the festival. The municipal authorities are counting on several thousand visitors.

The created sculptures will be exposed for observation until the first strong thaw. It should be noted that over 26 years of the event’s existence, 1,300 snow castles and other sculptures have been built.
